Sharing the road

You are riding a bicycle after dark. From how far away must the white light of your front lamp be visible?

  1. 300 feet. Correct answer
  2. 500 feet.
  3. 200 feet.

Why

Three pieces of equipment, three distances, and the handbook gives each its own. The front lamp shows a white light that must be visible from 300 feet. The rear needs a built-in red reflector, a solid red light or a flashing red light, visible from 500 feet. Pedals, shoes or ankles carry a white or yellow reflector visible from 200 feet. The fourth item has no distance attached: a reflector on each wheel, white or yellow at the front and white or red at the back, or else reflectorized tires. If you order them from the ground up, the numbers climb: 200 at the feet, 300 at the front, 500 at the back. The handbook adds one thing that is not equipment at all, which is to avoid wearing dark clothing after dark.

Where this comes from

California Driver's Handbook, DL 600 ENGLISH (REV. 6/2025). The correct answer is 300 feet..
