California DMV practice test

Each attempt draws 36 questions and asks for 30 correct answers. The under-18 version draws 46 and asks for 38. Every question is written from the California Driver's Handbook and comes with an explanation and the section it is based on.

What the questions cover

100 questions in 8 topics. Pick a topic to study it question by question.

How the practice test works

  1. How an attempt is built

Each attempt draws 36 questions at random from the bank and asks for 30 correct answers, in the standard version or the under-18 version.

  2. An explanation after every answer

Right or wrong, you see why, which other option people confuse it with, and the section and page of the handbook it comes from.

  3. Retry only what you missed

The result lists exactly the questions you got wrong. Retry those alone, as many times as you need; your misses stay in your browser between visits.

Three sample questions

  1. You are approaching an intersection and the traffic signal turns solid yellow. What should you do?
  2. You are stopped at a signal showing a red arrow and want to turn in the direction the arrow points. What must you do?
  3. The center of the road is marked with two sets of double solid yellow lines spaced two or more feet apart. What do these markings mean?
